This striking system is bang on the money when it comes to hi-tech design, and it also has the sonic performance to ensure its success. Even better is the reasonable price.
The VM1s come with both wall brackets and table stands. These slip into grooves on the rear of the speakers arranged to allow either vertical or horizontal mounting. It’s a neat idea, meaning the centre speaker can be used as a horizontal bar on top of the television where it looks very good.
But they do sound good: these are two-way units, packing a 25mm tweeter and a 12.5cm mid/bass unit, and using B&W’s usual dimpled port on the rear to tune the bass. Partnering them is the simple but effective AS1 subwoofer, which has an 85w power amp and a single 16.5cm bass unit again with that dimpled port but minimal controls. For example, there’s just a level control and a music/movies mode switch, so all the control of crossover frequency needs to be done in your receiver’s set-up.
The system may be simple but is works startlingly well, whether with music or DVD films. It can go loud without any hardness setting in, and while it hasn’t quite got the full-blooded richness of a bigger and much more expensive set-up, it delivers dialogue very clearly and successfully wraps the listener in sound. The speakers are designed for wide horizontal dispersion, and they succeed in producing a rear-channel spread that’ll make you wonder whether you need a sixth speaker back there. The relatively narrow vertical dispersion means the centre speaker has a tight focus when used in a horizontal layout.
The result is a surround system that’s exciting and capable of serious thump qualities that are just as well adapted to music as they are to movies. This is one of B&W’s most striking products of recent times and sets new standards in the ‘designer’ speaker field.

The VM1 is a 2-way magnetically shielded system comprising a 1-inch high frequency unit and a 5-inch cone bass/midrange. It has an integral Flowport, ensuring clean bass with good attack. The grille includes a rotatable badge enabling the speaker to be mounted vertically or horizontally. The speaker is an ideal solution for Home Theatre systems and is voice matched to the LM1, allowing a successful mixture of VM1s and LM1s in such systems.
The speaker comes with a bookshelf stand and swivelling wall bracket. A floor stand is available as a cost option.
